The European Parliament has pressed the Commission this week over the lack of progress in implementing the upgraded Schengen Information System II (SIS II) and the new Visa Information System (VIS) which have been delayed by more than a year and a half due to difficulties setting up the operational database. The smooth functioning of Schengen border controls and visa issuing is essential to guarantee security and free circulation within the Schengen area, and also to security for the 2012 London Olympics since the UK is set to join SIS II for access to Europ-wide police data

Commission called on to halt Polish government’s efforts to ban privately operated gaming machines
A law swiftly enacted in January sees the demise of the use of privately operated gaming machines in Poland. The Polish Government’s new law has resulted in fury and indignation among businesses involved who will bring their plight to Brussels this month in a series of meetings with EU officials. The European Commission has already been called on to examine whether an infringement case could be brought against the Polish Government on the basis that it failed to notify the new law.

GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer has condemned in the strongest possible terms the racist language used by far right Polish MEP Janusz Korwin-Mikke during a Strasbourg plenary debate yesterday on youth unemployment.
Zimmer said: "Hearing Mr Korwin-Mikke use such venomous and hate-filled rhetoric is truly shameful for this house. We urgently demand severe consequences for MEP Korwin-Mikke."

GUE/NGL MEPs expressed their strong support and solidarity to SYRIZA and its policies in the run up to the forthcoming Greek parliamentary elections at the group's meeting in Brussels today.
A victory by SYRIZA would be a clear and historic message for change both in Greece and the whole of Europe and against the neo-liberal policies and austerity measures that have damaged social cohesion and failed to tackle the economic crisis, providing no prospects for economic recovery, growth and fighting unemployment.

Obesity threat: Many Europeans unaware of the health implications
According to a major public perception survey, conducted among more than 14,000 people in seven countries, nearly a quarter of Europeans don’t realise that obesity can cause heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Less than half recognise a link with strokes and only 16% are aware of the connection with cancer.

European Parliament condemns increasing number of violations of fundamental rights in Hungary
The European Parliament has just adopted a joint resolution on the situation of Hungary presented by the GUE/NGL, Greens/EFA, S&D and ALDE (327 in favour, 293 against, 67 abstentions).
This joint resolution was supported by many human rights NGOs including Amnesty International, FIDH, who made a strong appeal to MEPs to vote in favour via social media.

Economic expectations for Central and Eastern Europe including Turkey (CEE region) have deteriorated in April2016. In the current survey, the ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for the CEE region has decreased by 13.1 points to a level of minus 8.4 points. Among the individual countries, the indicators for the Czech Republic (down by 16.0 points) and Hungary (down by 12.8 points) have seen the largest decreases.

Poland and EU must continue honest dialogue on constitutional concerns

region) have improved in June 2016 for the second consecutive time. In the current survey, the ZEW-Erste Group Bank Economic Sentiment Indicator for the CEE region has climbed by 11.2 points to a level of 15.8 points.
